about

The Last Of The Independents is a side-project from the unlikely pairing of Barnsley folk-blues guru Richard Kitson and Scott Doonican from comedy-folkies The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican.

Bootlegged Material is an album that took five and a half years in the making...

Friends since school, both Richard and Scott share a love of the music of late Irish blues-rock virtuoso, Rory Gallagher, and, as the two musicians used to sometimes play together at open mic nights, they decided it would be fun to play a set of a few of the songs that Gallagher played and covered in his acoustic set.

And so, they played a one-night-only show at the now-demolished Boardwalk in Sheffield on 20th May 2008, which saw them play to an audience of about 15 people in support to bluesman Stephen Dale Petit. This performance was captured for posterity, and is included as the 'bonus tracks' of this collection, alongside two sets of 'live' studio recording sessions. These studio recordings were made at Moon-On-A-Stick studios on 26th Oct 2009 & 22nd January 2014, where in the space of a around five hours collectively, L.O.T.I. knocked out ten 'raw' recordings with no overdubs whatsoever (tracks 1-10).

There is an eclectic mixture of songs that Rory Gallagher wrote and songs that he covered. The songs recorded in the 2009 session were, by and large, treated closely to the style in which Rory would have performed them. The songs in the second 2014 session of recording were some of the 'rowdier' songs that Rory would have traditionally played on his famous battered '57 strat, however the Independents figured had Rory still been alive he may have revisited some of these in an 'unplugged' style and therefore liberties were taken, especially with a rip-roaring track like Shadow Play.

It's a rarity to catch The Last of the Independents live, but when they do, it's always magical.

This one's for Rory.
